The first ScaleUp Thurston cohort has completed the discovery and self-examination phase of the 14-week process and entered the second phase … which digs deeper into practical means to improve systems and approaches to drive business growth. Meanwhile, the time has come for the next round of business owners to Apply Today to ScaleUp Thurston to take their businesses to the next level.

Table-Discussion-SmallIn weeks one and two, instructor Daryl Murrow led participants through a series of individual and group exercises to help participants understand their businesses. The group looked at Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats through a combination of group discussions and homework assignments. Several companies in the group recognized their high level of customer service as a core strength, and noted their needs for more employees and more training for future growth.

In week three, Perry Shea of SCJ Alliance gave a guest presentation on “Making Strategic Decisions.” Many of the ScaleUp Thurston cohort commented on how compelling and clear Perry made the importance of strategy.

Nick-Malden-Guest-SmallScaleUp Thurston also features opportunities for companies to gain greater understanding and access to capital, and the special event “Money Talks”, sponsored by Heritage Bank, brought the commercial lender, a Community Development Financial Institution (Craft3) and a Director of the Tacoma Angel Network (Nick Malden) to explain the differences between loans, equity investments and other alternative sources of financing.

Going forward, the group is digging into reviewing and evaluating financial statements, strengthening their products and services, and better understanding their customer markets.
